Lessons From Top Social Media Brands

Lessons From Top Social Media Brands

Have you ever accidentally refreshed your feed after finding a post you wanted to share, and now you can’t find it?

That’s kind of how social media managers feel all the time.

This industry moves fast and changes constantly. Brands who stand out do more than just post content – they create memorable experiences that people want to share.

Let’s examine how two top social brands, Duolingo and Spotify, have mastered this. We’ll learn from their approaches and how you can apply them to your own content.

Duolingo

Duolingo’s famous TikTok feed (shoutout Zaria Parvez) broke the educational content mold. They don’t just promote their app – they lean into humor, memes, and dancing.

And it works!

Why? Because they’re not afraid to take risks. Duo the owl’s quirky personality – and even their campaign killing him off – is playful and absurd, often feeling more entertainment than marketing. This approach has helped Duolingo go viral countless times and build a loyal following of fans who watch the feed like a Netflix show.

The Lesson

Recognize the value of authenticity and taking creative risks. I’m not saying to post twerking videos (you probably shouldn’t), but don’t be afraid to step outside your brand’s comfort zone. This may involve jumping on TikTok trends (as long as they make sense for your brand), filming skits with employees and customers, or doing a fun giveaway.

Get a group of creative people in a room and see what you can come up with. If you’re having fun, your audience will too – and your content will come across as more authentic and human, encouraging engagement and sharing.

Spotify

Spotify’s social media success is almost entirely due to one annual campaign you’ve probably also shared: Spotify Wrapped!

Spotify users sharing their music stats has created massive organic reach, turned music streaming into a social experience, and spawned countless memes.

The Lesson

Think social sharing first. Whatever your product, create relatable content that users want to share or repost.

Adapt it for your niche:

  • Bookstore? Post slides where users show off their favorite reading tropes.
  • Travel agency? Build a post where users show off their dream vacations.
  • Restaurant? Have users share the dish on the menu they’d choose for their last meal.

Whatever you choose, learn from Spotify and rely on personalization, strong visuals, and maybe even a little bit of good-natured anticipation to turn customers into advocates.

Final Thoughts

The success of Duolingo and Spotify demonstrates that creativity, authenticity, and shareability are key to social media success. Don’t be jealous of these brands – learn from their tried and tested social media strategies and make them your own.
